CHARLES M. REYNOLDS, or PARK NEVADA.
rmnuracrnnn or B'RIQUnrs D, OTHER ARTICLES};
Specification 6r Letters ratenr.
Application filed A pri1 28,,-1914.-: Serial No 834,979.
To all'whom it may concern: I Y BB-lU-kIlDWIl-thilt I, CHARLES M. REYNOLDS,
a citizen of the United' States, residing; at
Sparks-,in the county ofWashoe and State of Nevada, 7 have invented new and. useful Improvements in 'the Manufactureof-Briquets and other Articles,- of which the following 1 is a specification.
This invention relates tothe manufacture of compressed charcoal 'briquets froni sawdust-and other sawmill and timber waste, slabs or other refuse wood-tor organic vegetable substances; and-the recovery of thevolatile constituents of the organic matter,
i into one end of-the'kiln or retort and .30
' kiln 'or' into any suitable type ofzbri suchlas' alcohol, creosote, tar, turpentine or theil1ke, freed therefrom by destructive dis- 7 tillation."
In carrying my invention -into practice, the vegetable matterto be treated 1s first fed into a stationary or rotary kiln or retort, in
which it is wholly. or partially carbonized The volatile substances driven off fromthe material by this process of carbonization and destruct ve -d1stillation are collected and conveyed to suitable'receptacles for condensation and. the recovery of the by-products II1I1t10I1d'. Preferably the raw mater al, ma ground or comnnn uted state, is introduced discharged from the oipposite end" thereof, the
v operation-being practically 'continuo1'1s,- and automatic in character. The carbon discharged from the kiln or retort, if not previously granulated or powdered isthen gran 'ulat'edor'reduce'd to asuitably comminuted state, aft'eluvl'iicli-tlie material' -is fed into'a flr'nechainical miXen Where it is combined While still hot 'Witl1-f .'Qm three to' five-per cent. of crude oil, coal tar, pitch or any suit; able one -ofthe .by-prod-ucts as .abinder; the
" ingredients.- being agitated" and! combined harden; the ,briquets.
I a part at leastof .the binder; therbriquets. y, y v Iii-testimony whereof Iaflix my signature in; presence er pressure into hard and easy to handleiithe heat" riving off all of the remaining.nioisture'and 'volatile matter contained in the mass through the-addition of the binder." The moisture and volatile constituents maybe carried'offandseparated. for therecovery of their com-f pOIlQIlt parts and the by-15r0ducts.-resulting' therefrom. 1f desired,- the briq-uets-jsvhen By this process of manufacture ordinary organic vegetable, waste matter may, be used.
with great.economy in the production of briquets and superior briquets'made, and at thes'ame time all the volatile constituents of the materialmay bedriven 'ofiand recovered, enabling greater economyofim'anufac- ,ture to he obtained.
1 clai1nz- 1. The process or making brlq'uets' from wood waste,'wh1cl1.' comprises carbonlzln'g said material, mixing. the same \Vltha .suit'.
able. proportion of a volatile binder, comprising a part "at least, ofthe material'driven- :ofl? during said carboni-zing'step, compress .ing the mixture into form, heating the same to a temperature sufiicient to 'drive off 'the' volatile constituents of the" binder, and to 2. The .process of making 'briquetswaste -'w0od, which lcompri'ses' carbonlzlng said wood; mixing therewith aLsui-table pro portion 'of a volatile jbinder :ancludmg the tar driven off insaid carbonizihg "step, compressingthen ixture into form; heatlng the sfa'Ine-to a temperature sufficient to driveofi of two- .witness'es. and to .harden'i x 90 through a highly heated kiln 'or to; thoroughly dryer re'nd'enthe same crime;
discharged from the second kiln or heating chamber may be cooled'by anair blast or] other suitable cooling niealigfafter which .tl'ieyf are storedforuse. 4 i
