Abstract

279,140. Hart, A. M. April 22, 1926. Materials for making coke and other products. -Vegetable matter in the nature of grasses, weeds, bracken, husks, flax, straw, leaves, tropical vegetable waste, &c., is mixed with sodium or potassium silicate briquetted, dried, and subjected to incandescent heat in a furnace. The vegetable matter may first be carbonized. Carbonized mineral matter such as coal refuse or dust or lignite or cannel may be added to the vegetable matter or to the carbonized vegetable matter before briquetting, a suitable carbonizing process being described in Specification 188,807. The silicate, which is employed in the proportion of about 3 to 7¢ per cent, may be used as a solution or in powder form and the fuel may be moistened before impregnation. Elephant grass, non-mucilaginous sea-weeds, river sudds, refuse of cotton, paper, rice husking and sugar cane crushing mills, may be utilized.
