Peat, preparing; composition fuel.-In a continuous briquetting process peat is macerated, subjected to treatment in a rotary vacuum filter b or other moisture, separator, conveyed within a. heated casing c to an autoclave d then passed to a container (not shown) in which the pressure is suddenly reduced to disrupt the peat cells, and, preferably after treatment in a further filter e, is conveyed within a casing f through which a cooling medium is passed to a briquetting press g, the briquettes being conveyed to a finishing dryer k to reduce the moisture content down to 20-25 per cent. The peat is treated within the, autoclave with superheated steam at a pressure of e.g. 2-20 atmospheres. The cooling medium consisting of air or flue gases may after passing through the casing f be conducted to the preheating conveyer. Sawdust, finely divided coal, or other combustible material may be added before the peat is briquetted.
