Abstract

29,009. Phillips, H. J., and Phillips, A. Dec. 16. Drawings to Specification. Fuel. -- Coaldust is made into briquettes by (1) grinding with 45-60 per cent of water to a pulp; (2) briquetting at once without allowing settling in moulds from which the water can escape, under a pressure of 3 to 5 tons to the square inch; (3) drying the briquettes by passing them through a tunnel kiln, the initial temperature of which may be 80‹ C. and is below boiling-point to avoid cracking, and the final temperature somewhat below that at which the coal begins to decompose, ranging from 250‹ C. for semi-bituminous coal to 500‹ C. for anthracite; and (4) further compressing them while yet soft under 5-15 tons to the square inch in moulds heated by superheated steam. A binder which will stand the temperature employed may be added, but is not necessary.
