Abstract

231,592. Nielsen, H. Jan. 5, 1924. Peat, preparing.- In a continuous process for drying peat the peat is pulped or macerated, passed into a vacuum filter or the like, preheated by exposure to air, combustion gases or the like, treated with steam e.g. at a pressure of 100 to 250 lbs. per square inch in an autoclave and then blown into an expansion tank by a discharge valve being opened to effect a sudden reduction of pressure. The raw peat may be pulped in the presence of hot waste water and after being filtered may be elevated to a series of superimposed closed paddle conveyers through which a current of heating gas is passed; the treated peat may be cooled in similar conveyers, the cooling medium after taking up heat being passed to the preheating conveyers. After filtration, the cooled peat may be heated to expel a further amount of mositure to allow of the mass being briquetted. The briquettes may be dried and afterwards carbonized for the recovery of peat coke. oils, ammonia and gas. The peat coke may be briquetted with the addition of a binder.
