Abstract

558,694. Fuel briquettes. SQUIRE, L. R. L. Aug. 18, 1942, No. 11565. [Class 55 (ii)] Peat prepared according to Specification 417,923 is used as a binding material in the production of briquettes containing coal fines which may be a mixture of coking and non-coking coal, the briquettes being carbonized to convert the peat into charcoal which forms a matrix for the carbonized fines. The briquettes are dried before carbonization which takes place at high or low temperature. The peat binder is prepared by converting peat to a dispersed condition by the addition of an alkali such as sodium carbonate, caustic soda, or caustic potash in the manner described in Specification 417,923. The dry weight of the binder varies from 1¢ to 6 per cent according to the coking index of the coal, which should generally not exceed 9. The powdered coal is mixed with the wet binding material. The fuel may be produced in pellet form for gas producers.
