566,001. Composition fuel. ERICKSON, J. A. Aug. 18, 1942, No. 11627. Convention date, July 11, 1941. Addition to 550,167. [Class 50] Relates to improvements in the starch binder for fuel briquettes described in the parent Specification and comprises a binder prepared by heating to a temperature between 220‹ and 350‹ F. at atmospheric pressure a mixture of starch with water and an alkali such as sodium hydroxide or carbonate, the temperature, time of heating and amount of alkali being proportioned to produce a heavy, viscous, sticky fluid which is added to the fuel before briquetting. The ratio of starch to water may be approximately 1 to 1, but may be altered to about 1 to 3, and the alkali is approximately 2 per cent by weight of the dry starch. The temperature is controlled by use of a pressure vessel. The amount of binder used is such that it forms about to 2 per cent by weight of the dry coal fines. To prevent the growth of mould on the briquettes, an antiseptic ingredient such as copper sulphate or sodium fluoride may be added. A low-volatile strongly coking coal may be added, when coke breeze or petroleum coke fines are employed, to prevent rapid disintegration in a fire. Specification 9932/00, [Class 50], is referred to.
