Plastic compositions containing soluble silicates and fibres.-A heat insulating composition for use in lagging pipes, boilers, etc. is prepared by mixing silicate of potash or soda, asbestos, cork, magnesium carbonate, refractory earth and hemp. Shaped pieces formed from the composition are attached to the pipes etc. by a silicate cement. An example of a suitable composition is.:-silicate of potash or sodium, in solution 80 parts, asbestos 40 parts, cork 20 parts, magnesium carbonate 2 parts, refractory earth 8 parts, hemp 5 parts.
