Abstract
A hydraulic cement is made by mixing calcium carbonate, especially natural limestone rock, with a clinker, derived from burning a mixture of calcium carbonate and aluminium silicate, in such amount that the proportion of pure carbonate added to free lime in the clinker is approximately 8 to 1. The mixed carbonate and clinker are ground together to cement fineness. The clinker is preferably made from a mixture of three parts of calcium carbonate to one part of aluminium silicate and free silica. In an example 88 parts of calcium carbonate is added to 100 parts of a clinker containing 12 parts of free lime. If great strength is not required the proportion of added carbonate may be increased to for instance 85 per cent of the total material. Retarding agents such as potassium dichromate, boric acid, borax, and sodium, potassium or calcium sulphate may be added.
