Porous compositions.-In the manufacture of building materials such as wall-boards by mixing a solution of sodium silicate with a filler and heating the mixture to produce a porous coherent mass, " light magnesium carbonate " is incorporated in the mix. This permits the use of fillers such as limestone in a coarser condition than previously and also the use of cheaper, fillers such as sand, ground slag, ground shale, or clay. Further, the sodium silicate solution may be of less density than previously, e.g. of density less than 48.5‹ Be.
