Emulsions, making. - Asphalt emulsions are prepared by adding a solution of alkali, such as sodium or potassium hydrate or carbonate, to a molten mixture of asphalt and a saponifiable substance such as fatty acid, in successive quantities of different concentration, the bulk of the alkali, for example three-quarters being added in one of the quantities, preferably the first. For example, to a mixture of 50 parts of asphalt and 2 parts of fatty acid at 100‹ C., caustic soda solution is added in the following successive quantities and proportions and with constant agitation- 1.4 parts in 12 parts of water, 0.4 parts in 12 parts of water, 0.1 part in 10 parts of water, and 0.1 part in 12 parts of water.
