Abstract
In the production of cellulose ethers, alkylation is effected in the presence of a salt of carbonic acid whereby the presence of free mineral acid is avoided and also the end of the reaction can readily be ascertained by the presence of free carbonic acid. The products are neutral and can be readily washed. Carbonates such as that of sodium, potassium, calcium or barium may be added in solid condition; or soluble carbonates maybe added in solution or may be produced in the alkali cellulose by treatment with carbonic acid. In an example, 100-200 parts of alkali cellulose is mixed with 1 part sodium carbonate and ethylated with an excess of ethyl chloride at 100-140 DEG C. After 1 hour samples of gas are withdrawn and passed through baryta water, and as soon as a considerable quantity of barium carbonate is precipitated, the excess ethyl chloride is distilled. The residue is disintegrated, washed and dried. Specifications 200,827 and 305,946, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], are referred to; also German Specifications 408,342, 435,346, 488,780 and 499,129 and U.S.A. Specification 1,694,127.
