Abstract

White lead is prepared by reacting on a highly basic sulphate of lead with an aqueous solution of a bicarbonate of an alkali metal which may contain undissolved carbonate. The basic sulphate is prepared by the action of concentrated sulphuric acid on lead monoxide in the presence of a small quantity of another acid such as acetic or nitric acid, to ensure the presence of some lead in water soluble form, the mixture being ground during the process. Acid sulphates of alkali metals such as sodium or potassium may be substituted for the sulphuric acid. The temperature during sulphating should be maintained at about 40 DEG C. by blowing in steam, and should not exceed 50 DEG C. The proportion of water during sulphating should be between 1/2 and 2 parts for each one part of the oxide. The final product is washed and dried or mixed with oil and ground. Figures are given of the various quantities used.
