Abstract
Vat-dyestuffs are produced by the action of alkaline condensing agents such as caustic alkali, upon nitrogen-containing compounds obtainable by action of nitrating agents on 2 : 21-dibenzanthronyl. According to an example a product dyeing cotton in grey-blue to black shades from a claret-red hydrosulphite vat is prepared by fusing nitro-2 : 21-dibenzanthronyl with caustic potash and alcohol at 225-230 DEG C., dissolving the mass in water, blowing in air, and acidifying. Nitro-2 : 21-dibenzanthronyl, probably a mixture of isomerides, is obtained by dissolving 2 : 21-dibenzanthronyl in sulphuric acid and adding nitric acid or a nitrate; it dissolves in alkaline hydrosulphite.
