284,035. British Alizarine Co., Ltd., Dawson, W. H., Souter, C. W., and Anderson, J. Nov. 3, 1926. Benzanthrones are produced by condensing anthraquinones or the corresponding anthranols with the reaction mixture obtained bv treating glycerol with a sulphur-containing chlorinating agent such as sulphurmono- or di-chloride, thionyl chloride, or sulphuryl chloride; a dehydrating condensing agent such as sulphuric acid is also present. Some of the products contain sulphur and yield compounds of the violanthrone type by the usual treatment such as fusion with alcoholic potash. According to examples anthranol is condensed, in presence of sulphuric acid, with the reaction products from glycerol and thionyl chloride, sulphur dichloride, or sulphur monochloride; the benzanthrone derivatives thus obtained from the thionyl chloride or sulphur dichloride products yield violanthrone dyestuffs on alkali fusion but that from the sulphur monochloride product yields a yellow dyestuff probably of the dibenzanthronyl type.
