Anthraquinone vat dyes are obtained by the action of alkaline condensing agents on anthraquinonylmercaptobenzanthrones or anthraquinonylmercaptodibenzanthronyls other than those of such compounds in which an anthraquinone residue is attached by means of a mercapto group to the Bz1- and/or 2-positions in a benzanthrone radical. In examples, the following substances are fused with alcoholic potash :-1<1>-anthraquinonyl-6-mercaptobenzanthrone, 1<1>-anthraquinonyl- 8-mercaptobenzanthrone, di-a-anthraquinonyl- 6 : 6<1>-dimercapto-2 : 2'-dibenzanthronyl (prepared by condensing 1 mol. of 6: 6<1>-dichloro-2 : 2<1>-dibenzanthronyl with 2 mols. of sodium anthraquinone-1-mercaptide), di-a-anthraquinonyl-6: :6<1>- dimercapto-Bz1 : Bz1<1>-dibenzanthronyl and di-aanthraquinonyl - dimercapto - 2 : Bz1<1> - dibenzanthronyl (prepared by treating 2 : Bz1-dibenzan thronyl with bromine and condensing 1 mol. of the dibromo derivative with 2 mols. of sodium anthraquinone-1-mercaptide). The products dye cotton in greenish-blue to marine-blue shades.
