315,033. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). April 26, 1928. ms-Anthradianthrones are obtained by treating 2 : 2<1>-dimethyl - ms - benzdianthrone or allo-msnaphthodianthrone or their derivatives with alkaline condensing agents under energetic conditions, with or without the addition of an oxidizing agent, such as an alkali metal nitrate or manganese dioxide; the process is a modification of that claimed in Specification 303,184. In examples, (1) allo-ms-naphthodianthrone, obtained according to example 1 of Specification 303,184, is heated with caustic potash to 280‹ C., and (2) 2 : 2<1>-dimethyl-ms-benzdianthrone is stirred into an alcoholic caustic potash melt, heated to 145' C., and, after distilling off the alcohol, the temperature is raised to 280‹ C.; the product in each case agrees in its properties with the ms-anthradianthrone obtained according to Specification 303,184.
