Abstract
Cyclohexylphenols are manufactured by treating cyclohexylbenzene or a homologue thereof with at most twice its volume of fuming sulphuric acid of about 20 per cent. SO3-content or with an equivalent quantity of another sulphonating agent, until a monosulphonic acid is formed which is stable to boiling with dilute acids and alkalies, and converting this monosulphonic acid into the corresponding cyclohexylphenol by alkali fusion. In examples: (1) cyclohexylbenzene is treated with fuming sulphuric acid of 20 per cent SO3-content and the sulphonation mixture is worked up to yield the sodium salt of cyclohexylbenzene-p-sulphonic acid, which is converted into p-cyclohexylphenol by the melting process; (2) sodium cyclohexylbenzene-p-sulphonate is heated with sodium hydroxide solution at 290--300 DEG C., producing p-cyclohexylphenol; (3) the potassium salt of cyclohexylbenzene-p-sulphonic acid is heated at 290 DEG C. with potassium hydroxide solution yielding crude cyclohexylphenol.
