Abstract

Thymol is made by treating a mixture of meta-cresol mono- and di-sulphonic acids, obtained by sulphonating meta-cresol and in which the proportion of the 6-mono-sulphonic acid is considerably larger than that of the 4-monosulphonic acid, with a quantity of propylene, or of a substance, e.g. propyl or isopropyl alcohol, yielding propylene under the conditions of reaction, sufficient to monopropylate substantially only the mono-sulphonic acids, desulphonating the sulphonic acids in the resulting reaction mixture to produce meta-cresol and a mixture of propylated meta-cresols, and, after the separation of meta-cresol, isolating thymol from the propylated meta-cresols. Advantageously, at least 70 per cent of the mono-sulphonic acids in the mixture of meta-cresol mono- and di-sulphonic acids consists of meta-cresol-6 sulphonic acid, the mixture being made by sulphonating meta-cresol under defined moderately strong conditions, e.g. with 98 per cent sulphuric acid in a proportion of substantially 3 mols. of H2SO4 per mol. of meta-cresol at at least 80 DEG C. Other sulphonating agents may be used such as chlorosulphonic acid or fuming sulphuric acid. The propylating agent may be applied directly to the sulphonation mixture before the sulphonation is complete. Examples relate to: (1) and (2) sulphonating m-cresol with differing amounts of 98 per cent sulphuric acid and treating the cooled sulphonation mixture with absolute isopropyl alcohol with subsequent heating at 70-120 DEG C., treating the product with steam at 140 DEG C. to effect desulphonation and to distil a mixture of meta-cresol and propylated meta-cresols from which crystalline thymol may be obtained by further distillation and cooling the distillate; (3) sulphonating and propylating meta-cresol as in (1), using meta-cresol of which more than half has been recovered from a previous treatment, together with a mixture of isopropyl alcohol, water and some of the mono-propylated meta-cresols recovered from a previous treatment.
