Abstract

Basic lead acetate is prepared by treating litharge with acetic acid with or without sodium acetate or with an acetate such as sodium acetate and dilute sulphuric acid, the strength of the acetic acid being from 4 1/2 to 60 per cent and the proportions from 16 to 22 absolute acetic acid per 100 parts of litharge, the product containing from 10 to 73 per cent of water at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C. White lead.-The basic acetate solution prepared as above is treated with a mixture of sodium or potassium or ammonium carbonate and bicarbonate, the carbonate being wholly in solution and the bicarbonate preferably partly in suspension, partly in solution, and partly added dry after the addition of the dissolved and suspended carbonates, and the operation being effected in the case of ammonium carbonates under a slight pressure of carbonic acid. The proportion of the carbonates used is from one-fifth to two-fifths parts of the mixed carbonates to one part of litharge contained in the basic acetate, and the proportion of bicarbonate to carbonate employed may be 60 to 75 parts bicarbonate to 40 to 25 parts carbonate. The white lead precipitate is separated, and washed with water or with normal or basic lead acetate in dilute solution for the purpose of removing any alkali carbonates adsorbed in the precipitate, and finally washed with water. Specifications 223/76, 9122/87, 6683/91, 13886/96 and 9638/12 are referred to.
