Abstract
258,020. Mallabar, H. J. June 17, 1925. Cellulose acetate; preparatory treatment of cellulose.-For the manufacture of cellulose acetate, the cellulose is preliminarily treated with a mixture of acetic acid and sulphuric acid, preferably in the cold; the sulphuric acid is then neutralized by the addition of a salt such as an alkali acetate; and the acetylation is then conducted in the absence of sulphuric acid, but preferably with the addition of a small quantity of zinc chloride and at a temperature between 20 and 40‹ C., preferably at 30-40‹ C. To obtain a product soluble in acetone water is added to the solution, which is maintained at 100‹ C. until the product shows the desired solubility.
