Abstract
Cellulose sulphates are prepared by incorporating cellulose, at a temperature not exceeding about 70 DEG C. and in the presence of a base, with not more than about half molecular proportion of sulphating agent for every unit of cellulose, until the material has been converted to a form which is capable of substantially complete solution in aqueous sodium hydroxide of about 10 per cent concentration. When the cellulose sulphates do not dissolve in the aqueous sodium hydroxide by simple mixing, they may be brought into solution by freezing the mixture until crystals of ice appear and then thawing, or with the help of colloids or dispersing agents, or by mechanical dispersion in the manner described in Specifications 410,152 and 410,153. Suitable esterifying agents are sulphuryl chloride and chlorsulphonic acid. The former is used in conjunction with a strong base and preferably in presence of a small quantity of chloracetic acid. Pyridine may be employed as the base when chlorsulphonic acid is used. The products may be employed in the manufacture of films or threads, or for finishing or filling cloth.
