Abstract

Compositions for producing azo dyes are made by mixing aromatic nitramines or salts thereof with coupling components in the presence of an alkali and a water-soluble nitrite. Water-soluble salts and/or stabilizing agents may also be added. The nitramines may be prepared by any known method. In examples the following mixtures are specified: (1) sodium o-nitrophenylnitraminate, caustic soda, 2 - hydroxy - 3 - naphthoylaniline, sodium nitrite and sodium phosphate; (2) 1 - methoxy - 4 - nitro - 6 - nitraminate of sodium, m-nitranilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, caustic soda, sodium carbonate, sodium nitrite and sodium fluoride; (3) 1-methoxy-3-nitro-6-phenylnitraminate of sodium, 4-hydroxynaphthylphenylketone, caustic soda, sodium nitrite and sodium carbonate. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of compositions containing the following ingredients: (4) sodium salt of 2 : 5-dichlorphenylnitramine, caustic soda, 2 - hydroxy - 3 - naphthoic acid anilide, sodium nitrite and phosphate; (5) sodium salt of 2 : 5-dichlorphenylnitramine, caustic soda, 2 - hydroxy - 3 - naphthoic acid - o - anisidide, sodium nitrite, fluoride, carbonate and phosphate; (6) sodium salt of 2 : 5-dichlorphenylnitramine, caustic soda, sodium nitrite, and formate and diacetoacetic-o-tolidide; (7)--(10) sodium salt of 2 : 5 - dichlorphenylnitramine, 2 - methyl - 5 - chlorphenyl - 1 - nitramine, sodium salt of 2 - methyl - 4 - nitrophenyl - 1 - nitramine or 4 - chloro - 2 - aminodiphenylether-nitramine, the anilide or o-toluidide of 2 : 3 - oxynaphthoic acid or p-cresotinic acid-o-tolidide, caustic soda, sodium nitrite and sodium formate. Other nitramines, coupling components, alkalies and water-soluble salts are mentioned in the Specification. Specification 430,222 is referred to.
