Abstract

Compositions for use in dyeing and printing comprise a salt of the formaldehyde-bisulphite compound of a primary arylamine (cf. Specification 197,809, [Class 15 (ii), Dyeing, Processes &c. for], an alkali nitrite, and an arylamide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid (free state or alkali salt) in approximately stoichiometric proportions. They dissolve in water or aqueous alkali. The compositions may be applied to the fibre in solution or in the form of a printing paste and the azo-colours developed by treatment with an acid or acidic substance. In an example, the formaldehyde-sodium bisulphite compound of 5-chlor-o-toluidine is mixed dry with sodium nitrite and the o-anisidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and made into a printing paste with turkey-red oil, ethylene glycol, caustic soda, and wheat starch-tragacanth; the printed fabric is developed by exposure to the hot vapour of acetic acid. The formaldehyde-bisulphite compounds of aniline, o-anisidine and 4-chlor-o-toluidine are specified and the anilide, o-toluidide, p-chlor-anilide and 4-bromo-o-anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid.
