Abstract
Cellulose derivative composition is applied to fabrics or like textile materials and regenerated thereon, the composition comprising a water-insoluble cellulose ester or ether of low substitution which has been brought into the form of a syrupy solution in dilute aqueous caustic alkali and the solution subsequently treated to increase its viscosity substantially in relation to its concentration, without causing complete gelation or deposition. Such treatments include dilution with water and agitation, heating the solution, use of a water-soluble coagulant with agitation, e.g. an alkali metal salt, hydrochloric acid, ammonium salts or acetic acid. Filling or effect materials may be introduced before or after the gelatinizing step. Suitable cellulose esters and ethers are glycol cellulose, methyl cellulose, cellulose glycollic acid and cellulose sulphates, as described in Specifications 389,534, 410,152, 410,153, 416,590, 420,529, and 445,571. In examples: (1) glycol cellulose which is incompletely soluble in dilute caustic soda solution at ordinary temperatures is dissolved in 20 times its weight of 5,3 per cent caustic soda solution by freezing, is slowly diluted with water with agitation until the glycol cellulose concentration is 3 per cent, and china clay added to twice the weight of the glycol cellulose. The solution is allowed to stand for 1 hr. and then spread on to a cotton fabric; the fabric is treated with dilute sulphuric acid and washed; (2) a solution of glycol cellulose obtained as in example 1 is brought into gelatinous condition by the gradual introduction of 35-40 per cent of a saturated sodium chloride solution; (3) methyl cellulose as described in example 2 of Specification 416,590 is dissolved in 10 per cent caustic soda with the aid of a dispersing agent, and diluted by the addition of a sodium chloride solution; talc is added with stirring, and after standing 1-3 hrs. the mass is spread on a cotton fabric and regenerated; (4) a glycol cellulose solution obtained as in example 1 is mixed with metal powder, the solution heated to 50 DEG C. and applied to a cotton fabric at 45-50 DEG C.; the fabric is treated with dilute sulphuric acid and washed.
