Abstract

Alkali-metal salts of cellulose glycollic acid ether which are soluble or form colloidal solutions in water, are prepared by treating cellulose with monochloracetic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof in an excess of alkali hydroxide and a quantity of water not exceeding double the weight of the dry cellulose, the chloracetic acid or its salt being present in an amount between 50 to 100 parts per 100 parts of cellulose, and the mixture being heated for some time at 50-100 DEG C. Mechanical means are employed to thoroughly mix the reactants and to triturate the cellulosic material, the two operations being effected in one stage by treatment in a de-fibring device, or in two stages by treatment in a mixing and kneading apparatus followed by a crushing apparatus. In an example, cellulose is treated with sodium hydroxide and water in a mixing apparatus to which is subsequently added an aqueous solution of monochloracetic acid neutralized with sodium carbonate. The product is then passed through a crushing apparatus and subsequently heated for some hours at 80 DEG C. The product may be purified by washing with alcohol, or by forming the free glycollic acid ether, washing with water and neutralizing with alkali. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 138,116, [Class 2 (ii)], 469,901 and 482,885.
