Abstract
277,317. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Sept. 10, 1926, [Convention date]. Cellulose ethers, and processes for making films from.-Water-soluble sulphonated cellulose derivatives are obtained by causing cellulose in the form of an alkali compound or in the presence of an alkaline agent, to react with an aralkylhalide-sulphonic acid. In examples, mercerized cellulose is treated with alcoholic caustic soda solution, and to the mixture is added sodium benzylchloride - para - sulphonate dissolved in alcohol and the mass kneaded at 50-60‹ C.; mercerized cellulose is kneaded with caustic potash solution, the mass then pressed, and mixed with sodium benzylchloride-ortho-sulphonate while heating; mercerized cellulose is soaked with pyridine and then stirred with sodium xylylchloride-sulphonate. The products can be separated by conversion into their calcium or barium salts which are insoluble in water and from which the free acids can be obtained. Because of their incombustibility the products are suitable for impregnating textiles and for the manufacture of fireproof films; when used for impregnating, the fabric is soaked with an aqueous solution of the compound and a salt of a heavy metal, aluminium &c. added in order to precipitate the corresponding salt of the compound on the fibre.
