Abstract

Pyrene and hydroxypyrene sulphonic acids; acid wool dyes and substantive dyes, dyeing with.--Pyrene is exhaustively sulphonated by customary sulphonating agents and promoters such as mercury salts, to give the 3 : 5 : 8 : 10 tetra-sulphonic derivative. Pyrene already sulphonated in the 3, 3 : 8, or 3 : 10 positions may also be used. The product may be converted by means of strong alkaline agents into a compound in which one or more of the sulphonic groups have been replaced by hydroxy groups. According to examples: (1) pyrene is sulphonated with a sulphuric acid monohydrate with or without the addition of kieselguhr, or with sodium sulphate and sulphuric monohydrate; (2) pyrene-3-sulphonic acid is similarly sulphonated to give the tetrasulphonic acid; (3) pyrene 3 : 5 : 8 : 10-tetrasodium sulphonate is converted into a 3-hydroxy-5 : 8 : 10-trisulphonic acid, a dihydroxy-disulphonic acid, and a tetrahydroxy-pyrene, by means of caustic soda, milk of lime or aqueous ammonia. The tetrahydroxypyrene may be methylated or easily converted into naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid, and the hydrolysis with ammonia produces a 3-amino-5 : 8 : 10-trisulphonic acid as a dye-product. The hydroxy-sulphonic acids dye wool from an acid bath and may be after-treated with basic substances such as triethanolamine, hexahydroaniline, and barium hydroxide, or chromates, to give yellow to brown shades. The tetrahydroxypyrene has affinity for animal and cellulosic fibres and yields brown shades on after-treating with chromates.
