Abstract
Gelatine is deaminated by suspending it, preferably in flake form, in an aqueous solution of nitrous acid having a pH of 3.8-4.7 at such a temperature that the gelatine does not dissolve or swell to the point of imbibing more than ten times its weight of water until its isoelectric point is reduced to approximately pH 4. The starting-material is preferably alkali or lime processed gelatine having an isoelectric point 4.7-5.1. The nitrous acid amounts to not more than 40 per cent of the gelatine. The treated gelatine is decolourized by treatment with a reducing agent, preferably sodium hydrosulphite in 1 per cent aqueous solution, and is resolubilized by simultaneous or subsequent treatment with a dilute, aqueous solution of an alkali, e.g. a 0.1 per cent solution of sodium hydroxide, this treatment also serving to remove any anionic ash constituents. After washing with distilled water cationic ash constituents are removed by treatment with acidified water, e.g. dilute acetic acid.
