Emulsions, making.-Aqueous emulsions of asphalt, particularly Mexican or like artificial asphalt, or of bitumen, tar, or mineral or other pitch are prepared by adding to one or a mixture of these ingredients a small quantity, for example 1-5 per cent, of animal or vegetable pitch such as cotton stearine pitch or wool-grease pitch and adding this mixture in a molten or fluid condition to a hot dilute aqueous solution of alkali such as caustic soda or potash, sodium or potassium carbonate, bicarbonate, phosphate or silicate. The prepared emulsion may be mixed with one or more other emulsions prepared by the same or by a different process, for example that described in Specification 226,032. In a modified process the principal ingredient is dissolved in a solvent such as naphtha, and subsequently mixed with the other ingredients. A colloid mill may be employed to mix the ingredients or to homogenize the prepared emulsion. A small proportion of soap may be added to the finished emulsion, for example 0.25 per cent of sodium laurate.
