Abstract
252,260. Hay, G. S. Feb. 24, 1925. Emulsions, making. - Emulsions in water of solid bitumen of the type artificially prepared from petroleum are obtained by mixing with the molten bitumen a dilute aqueous solution of alkali and a proportion, up to about 10 per cent, of an emulsifying agent comprising a resin, resin acid, or resin oil. Preferably the emulsifyng agent and the alkali are added in turn to the molten bitumen, but this order of addition may be reversed, or the emulsifying agent and the alkali may be mixed together before addition to the molten bitumen; alternatively, the emulsifying agent may be dissolved in a solvent, in which case the alkali may be dispensed with. The emulsifying agent may be a gum-resin or the resinous by-product derived from the manufacture of wood pulp or paper, and may be used in admixture with a known emulsifying agent such as a fatty acid or casein. The alkali may be caustic soda, caustic potash, or sodium or potassium carbonate, silicate, or borate. The emulsions may be prepared in apparatus of the colloid mill type. Specifications 28178/10, 202,021, 202,235, and 239,120 are referred to.
