Abstract

A suspension of coal or the like in oil is stabilized by starch mixed or not with caustic soda. The starch may be dry or emulsified in water. There may be added water- or oil-soluble combustion accelerators, e.g. sodium or potassium salts or boric acid; combustion catalysts, e.g. ferric oxide, aluminium chloride; and oxidizing agents, e.g. potassium nitrate. Ozone may be mixed with the air used for the combustion. In an example, 40 lb. of coal, 60 lb. of oil obtained by the destructive distillation or hydrogenation of coal or shale, and an emulsion in water of 0.25 lb. of starch and 0.25 lb. of sodium chloride are ground for 5 hours in a Rex bar mill. Water up to 10 per cent by volume of fuel may be used. The coal may be ground with only part of the oil, the remaining oil being added later. According to the Provisional Specification sulphite lye or other emulsifying agent may be used as the stabilizer.
