Abstract
212,248. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Davey, W. P.). Feb. 27, 1923, [Convention date]. Emulsions, making .-Emulsions of oleaginous materials, such as japan, asphalts or gums, in water are made by producing a substantially water-free mixture of oleaginous material and an emulsifying agent, such as soap or ca,sein, heating the mixture to about 150‹ C. and adding hot or boiling water while stirring. In an example, 600 parts of a drying oil, such as linseed or china wood oil or both, are boiled with a solution of 15 parts of sodium carbonate in 80 parts of water. Soap may be used instead of alkali and sodium or potassium hydroxide may be used' instead of sodium carbonate in solid form or in solution. Mineral oil, oleic acid, castor oil or soya-bean oil may also be added at this stage. The water is evaporated, and an asphaltic material such as 600 parts of gilsonite, or natural gums, such as resin or copal with or without an oil, and driers, such as manganese or lead resinate, added. The composition is heated to about 250‹ C. to incorporate the asphalt &c. and then cooled to about 150‹ C., when hot or boiling water is added until sufficiently dilute, when the whole is cooled to about 30‹ C. to prevent scumming.
