Abstract
230,177. Mackay, H. A. Dec. 5, 1023. Emulsions, making.-Bituminous emulsions, for use in road-making, coal-briquetting, and for coating stone, wood, metal &c. and for preserving roofing felt and the like, are prepared by adding to melted or liquid bituminous material, such as that prepared from petroleum or tar, a small proportion of a protein and afterwards adding dilute alkali solution, such as caustic or carbonated alkali or borax, and then hot water. A portion of the protein may be substituted by fatty acid, and in addition there may be used starch or other farinaceous material. In examples dry powdered casein is added to molten Mexican asphalt and afterwards hot caustic potash solution and water, or to the melted asphalt are added in turn oleic acid, casein, starch, boiling potash solution, and hot water. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of a decomposition product of a protein as emulsifying agent and instances gluten and describes the mixing of the protein and alkali, which may be dry, before addition to the bitumen.
