Abstract
A cold asphalt street covering is prepared by mixing together a tarry substance, a bituminous substance, and 10-12 per cent of hydrated lime calculated on the weight of the end product. The lime may either be added dry or as milk of lime, consisting of 1/3 lime and 2/3 water. If desired 10-15 parts of benzene may be added. In an example, 100 parts tar, 25 parts of asphalt, and 40 parts of milk of lime of the above composition are mixed in a stirring machine. A modification of the process consists in mixing dry hydrated lime, with the other ingredients, and adding water at a later stage together with road metal and the like.
