Abstract
221,380. Low, L. W. Nov. 7, 1923. Emulsions, making.-Emulsions of bitumen, tar or pitch, for use in painting or surfacing road paths, tennis courts &c., painting and waterproofing wood, bricks, stone, concrete buildings &c., and as a binding agent for briquettes, are prepared by mixing the bitumen &c. with a quantity of tar oils insufficient. to dissolve it and adding the mixture while stirring to a hot completely saponified mixture of casein, resin, caustic soda and water. In an example, a mixture of casein and resin is first saponified with dilute caustic soda, then a further quantity of caustic soda added and then successively to the hot mixture crude naphtha, carbolic acid, and a mixture of tar and pitch or bitumen with crude naphtha, oil or tar spirits. The product is stable and may be diluted with water. Earth colours or aniline dyes may be used to colour the mixture.
