Abstract
Aggregate is admixed in the cold with an emulsion of a soft bitumen and then powdered hard bitumen is added. A volatile solvent or flux may also be included in the mix. Preferably, the hard bitumen is added to the mix after the emulsion has broken, and the breaking may be assisted by the addition of electrolytes such as lime, Portland cement, or a salt. The product consists of aggregate coated with soft bitumen with hard bitumen dispersed throughout the mixture. The soft bitumen may be petroleum still residue, pressure still tar, the hard bitumen may be a hard petroleum still residue, a native asphalt, Trinidad asphalt, or uintahite and the aggregate a bituminous sandstone, limestone, sand or rock.
