Abstract

Road paving material is prepared by coating broken or crushed medium-sized stone or gravel with a binder such as asphalt, tar, or a mixture thereof containing a filler such as stone meal, and is then provided with a second coating of a material such as finely-ground stone, slag, asbestos, Portland cement, lime, or soot impregnated with bituminous oils, the powdered fillers having been previously treated in two steps with bituminous oils of different viscosities. Insufficient oil is employed to effect complete saturation, from 3 to 6 per cent of the weight of the filler of the more liquid oil is applied first, and subsequently from 5 to 8 per cent of the less liquid oil.
