Abstract

Mastic asphalt is prepared by reducing in a flail mill without heating fragmented asphalt cement and finely-graded mineral aggregate in an amount sufficient to prevent the cement coalescing, then adding complemental aggregate through a powder blender, the aggregate then comprising the major component of the final mixture. The aggregates, which do not react chemically with the asphaltic cement, specified are limestone or silicious powder which can be the complemental or finely-graded mineral aggregate, but the former may also include fibrous matter, e.g. asbestos or wood, exfoliated minerals, e.g. vermiculite, or grit, or mixtures thereof. Specified cements are asphaltic bitumen, lake and natural asphalt, asphaltic resins, coal-tar resins or pitches, low temperature carbonization pitches, refined natural or synthetic vegetable resins, with or without flux oil, or mixtures thereof. Pigments may also be included.
