Abstract
A jointing composition to be laid cold comprises a soft residual bitumen fluxed with volatile oils, and a powder comprising oxidized bitumen of the "mineral rubber" grade and hardened rubber, together, if desired, with a mineral filler such as fine slate or asbestos fibre. The bitumen is one having a penetration at 25 DEG C. of 100-300, preferably 180-220, and is fluxed with solvent naphtha, to which may be added light creosote oil or kerosene, so as to provide a mixture of the consistency of thick paint. The rubber may be reclaim, in which case it constitutes 35-60 per cent of the powder, or natural or synthetic rubber compatible with oil, which may form 25-45 per cent of the powder. The components are mixed in the proportions of 60-37 per cent fluxed bitumen to 40-63 per cent of the powdered components. After laying, the composition can be covered with a layer of fine mineral powder such as cement or limestone to permit the passage of traffic without delay.
