Abstract
Road making or surfacing compositions are made by first treating mineral aggregate with a priming agent, comprising a well-settled tar, a dehydrated tar, evaporator tar, a mixture of pitch and tar oil or crude tar, adding to the primed aggregate an aqueous emulsion of tarry or bituminous material in sufficient quantity to provide the desired amount of binding material, and mixing until the emulsion has broken. In an example, ,75 gal. of evaporator tar was added to 3 cwts. of crushed blast furnace slag and 9 lb. of Portland cement in a rotary mixer; to the primed aggregate, 2 gals. of an aqueous emulsion of tar were added in two equal portions; mixing was continuous and the second portion was not added until the first portion had broken. The tar emulsion contained 70 per cent of tar by weight and had been prepared by the process described in Specification 465,589, [Group III], the emulsifying agents being sodium alginate and casein.
