Abstract

A bituminous emulsion containing clay and lime as fillers is made by mixing a bituminous or tar emulsion with clay and hydrate of lime under such conditions that breaking of the emulsion and aggregation of the bituminous globules into larger globules is prevented. In an example 1 part of fat clay is mixed with ,5 part of a 1 per cent solution of caustic soda and 4 parts of a 60 per cent emulsion of bitumen. To the mixture 2 parts of lime wash containing about 30 per cent of hydrated lime are added. Cement may be used instead of lime.ALSO:A bituminous composition containing clay and lime as fillers is made by mixing a bituminous or tar emulsion with clay and hydrate of lime under such conditions that breaking of the emulsion or aggregation of the bituminous globules into larger globules is prevented. In other examples mineral aggregate or sawdust is treated first with lime wash and then mixed with a mixture of bituminous emulsion and clay. Cement may be used instead of lime.
