Abstract
308,389. Kickman, T. M. Jan. 7, 1928. Emulsions, making.-In bituminous emulsions prepared with the aid of an alkaline solution of casein to which is added liquid or solid rosin. distilled Yorkshire grease, sulphonated fatty oil or mixtures of these, about 5 per cent acetanilide is incorporated with the rosin &c. In one example, to a solution of casein in caustic or carbonated soda or ammonia, preferably also containing hydrated lime, about 5 per cent of salicylic acid reckoned on the casein, is added. Sodium sulphate in the proportion of 2 or 3 per cent of the total mixture may also be added to increase the specific gravity of the mixture approximately to that of the bitumen employed. From 4¢-5¢ parts of the above mixture of rosin &c. and acetanilide are then dispersed in the casein solution and bitumen subsequently added at a temperature of 160-180‹ F. to produce the emulsion.
