Emulsions, making. - Aqueous bituminous emulsions, for use as paints or for coating roads, are prepared by the use, as emulsifying agents of fossil diatomaceae, for example commercial kieselguhr, and alkali, for example caustic soda, preferably in quantity less than that equivalent to the silica in the composition. The alkali, in combination with excess silica is stated to form, on drying of the emulsion, a hard, water-resistant bituminous composition.
