Abstract
A road surfacing material is prepared by coating gravel or similar aggregate with tar and then with a bituminous material, together with soda or other lye. The first coating consists of a water-in-oil emulsion of tar with an alkaline lye which increases the wetting-power of the binder, and the second coating is constituted by an oil-in-water emulsion of bitumen which breaks down on contact with the first coating. The first coating comprises 65 - 75 per cent. by weight of tar, which may contain a filler, and 35 - 25 per cent. of a 30 - 40 per cent. solution of soda, and is used in the proportion of 15 - 30 Kgs. per metric ton of gravel. The second coating consists of 50 - 60 per cent. of bitumen emulsified in water with the aid of soaps containing stearic, oleic, or resinic acids and ammonia, and is used in the proportion of 50 - 75 Kgs. per metric ton of gravel.
