Abstract
A bituminous surfacing-material for use in covering roofs, roads, and airfields comprises a rot-proofed fibrous base coated with a mixture of oxidized bitumen, having a softening point (ring-and-ball method) between 150 DEG and 230 DEG C. and a penetration at 25 DEG C. between 13 and 35, and 30-50 per cent. by weight of the whole mixture of a finely-divided mineral filler having a low bulk density and a high void content when compressed. The fibrous base is preferably paper felt, rag felt, or hessian or gunny sacking rot-proofed with a material which will not attack the bitumen, e.g., cuprammonium or copper oleate. The fillers may be dry fullers earth, china clay residues, precipitated chalk or hydrated lime ground so that at least 75 per cent. passes a 200 B.S. sieve.
