Abstract
236,641. Mackay, H. A. April 8, 1924. Emulsions, making.-Bituminous emulsions, for use for example as a binding medium in roadmaking and in the manufacture of coal briquettes and for coating or impregnating stone, wood, metal, roofing felt &c., are prepared by mixing a molten or liquid bituminous material with a small proportion of a sulphonated fatty oil and adding hot water with or without alkali. Acid sulphonated oils may be neutralized such as with ammonia. A portion of the sulphonated fatty oil may be replaced by fatty acid, casein or other known emulsifying agent and in the case of using free fatty acid sufficient alkali is employed to neutralize such acid. As bituminous materials are specified Mexican asphalt, pitch, native asphalt or bitumen and coal tar or other tar and as alkalies caustic potash or soda, the corresponding carbonates and borax. In examples Mexican asphalt is melted and sulphonated cod oil with or without oleic acid or neutral, acid or alkaline alizarine oil is stirred in and finally the whole is mixed with caustic potash or soda and hot water. Apparatus of colloid mill type or of the type described in Specification 202,021 may be employed for the emulsification. Specification 24135/06 also is referred to.
