Abstract

A road-surfacing material consisting of an emulsion of tar in water is characterized in that the emulsion contains an undissolved filler in the form of powdered coal. The term "tar" includes the non-gaseous total or partial distillate of coal, wood, petroleum, schists or bitumens. The volume of powdered coal may be equal to or less than the volume of the tar, a preferred proportion being 37-38 volumes of coal to 62-63 volumes of tar. The volume of the water may be from 5 to 35 per cent of the total volume of the emulsion. Coal muds obtained from coal washing plants may be ground and utilized wet. Emulsifying agents such as soap, alkaline resinate or oleate and sodium silicate, stabilizing agents such as carrageen jelly, carob-bean and resin, tar-fluxing substance such as petrol or coal oil, and solvents such as carbon disulphide, carbon tetrachloride or benzol may be added to the emulsion. An example is given.
