Abstract

255,911. Billinghame, W. E. Jan. 23, 1925. Emulsions, making.- Paints are prepared by emulsifying together bitumen, bitumenous material, tar, cresote, petroleum, heavy oil, &c. or a mixture of two or more of such materials, and a pigment or pigments. The bitumen &c. and pigment may be mixed together and emulsified, or the pigment may be mixed with an emulsifying agent, such as an alkaline casein solution, and bitumen &c. emulsion added. If the pigment be ground in oil, the mixture is emulsified and a bitumen &c. emulsion added. A preferred emulsifying agent is made by treating blocd. albumen or casein or other protein with water and caustic soda or the equivalent. In an example, bitumen or bituminous material is melted, and a pigment such as iron oxide added; a proportion of the emulsifying agent described above, and water, are added, and the whole stirred. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 11028/03, 15711/10, [both in Class 95, Paints &c.]; 154,236, and 221,380.
