Abstract

Organic substances, particularly resinous nitrogenous substances employed in treating rubber latex, are dispersed in water by first dissolving them in "rubber oil," i.e. the oily product obtained by dry distillation of rubber, rubber-like substances or artificial rubber, and subsequently emulsifying the solution with water to which "rubber oil" may also be added if desired. Emulsifying agents such as soap, saponin, gum arabic, agar, gelatine, casein, sodium silicate, alkali or ammonia, may be added to the water or the solution or may be generated from ingredients added to both constituents. Examples of the invention are as follow--(1) 100 parts of a vulcanization accelerator, comprising a resinous condensation product of acetaldehyde and aniline, are melted with 200 parts of "rubber oil" and 10 parts of oleic acid and are stirred with 600 parts of hot water containing 4 parts of casein and 30 parts of concentrated ammonia. The mixture is passed through a colloid mill to form a stable dispersion easily miscible with latex without coagulating the latter. (2) An aqueous dispersion of the resinous anti-oxidant made by condensing aldol with a -naphthylamine is prepared somewhat as in (1) employing gelatine instead of casein and using smaller proportions of auxiliary substances. (3) A melt of 80 parts of tar or mineral rubber, 20 parts of "rubber oil" and 4 parts of oleic acid is emulsified with 400 parts of water containing 1 part of casein and 10 parts of concentrated ammonia to form a bituminous composition for waterproofing surfaces or adding to latex. (4) 85 parts of petrolatum are melted with 15 parts of "rubber oil" and are emulsified with 400 parts of hot 1 per cent ammonium oleate p solution. The "rubber oil" may be rectified before use and the lighter or heavier fractions employed as desired.ALSO:Organic substances, particularly resinous nitrogenous substances employed in treating rubber latex, are dispersed in water by first dissolving in "rubber oil," i.e. the oily product obtained by dry distillation of rubber, rubber-like substances or artificial rubber, and subsequently emulsifying the solution with water, to which "rubber oil" may also be added if desired.
